    Description

    This 1916 Bronze Medal of Field Marshal Lord Kitchener (1850-1916) was Designed and Signed by by Jules Prosper Legastelois (1885-1931). J.P. Legastelois was a French Sculptor and Medalist. He studied sculpture with Emile Carlier and medal making with both Eugène Levasseur and Georges Tonnelier. Legastelois created plaques and medals for the Paris Mint and war memorials at Elijah, Eure and Ermont.
    Field Marshal Lord Horatio Herbert Kitchener started his military career in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). With a gift for organization, he went on to serve in increasingly pivotal ranks and roles in many campaigns including those in Egypt, Sudan, India and South Africa. In 1914 he was promoted to Secretary of State for War and was key in building Britain’s first mass army. He became the face of the First World War when his likeness was used on the ‘Your Country Needs You’ recruitment poster.
    The medal measures approximately 45mm and weighs 46 grams.
