Description
Charles L. Tappin's "Twin Oaks" EstateBabylon, Long Island
Commemorative Trowel dated September 17, 1892
This antique trowel was likely produced to commemorate the construction of a Long Island country estate,
Twin Oaks
, owned by Charles L. Tappin in the village of Babylon. According to a 1910 obituary for Mary C. Tappin, Twin Oaks was located on West Main Street and was one of the largest homes in the village.
The obituary for Charles L. Tappin who died on April 13, 1941 says he was a retired oil operator who had lived in Babylon since he retired 50 years earlier. This would put us around the year on the trowel (1892). Tappin's father, John Tappin, was a long-time Vice President of the Long Island Railroad.
This item measures slightly more than 7 3/4" long and is 2 3/8" wide. It has a wooden handle and was once silver plated. The engraving reads:
Mr. Charles L. Tappin
"Twin Oaks"
September 17th 1892
Babylon,
L.I.
The trowel has some ripples in it. The wooden handle is in very nice condition and is free of cracks. Please see the images provided, as they're part of the description.
