Description
WW1 1914 Star Medal Self Awarded to Malkin, Yorks & Lancs, Sheffield, YorkshirePrivately engraved naming (not renamed) to:
3380 Pte. S. Malkin Y. & L.R.
First name Sydney, his MIC shows that he served in several units incl. Royal Engineers but was NOT entitled to a Star.
A Sydney Malkin appears on the 1911 Census res. Sheffield, Yorkshire born circa 1885 with occupation as “Blacksmith’s Striker” employed in a Metal Forge. His service papers are on ancestry showing that he resided at 27 Watery Lane, Sheffield and enlisted January 1915 in the 4th Battalion Yorks & Lancs. He proceeded to France in 1916 and received a GSW to his right ankle on 4 July 1916. He had numerous disciplinary infractions for overstaying his leave. He ended up in the Royal Engineers (Railway Construction). An interesting fellow who obviously was a bit of a naughty lad.
This is a “self awarded medal” and he was not entitled to it.
Good very fine condition with a brass suspension bar.
