    Distinguished Conduct Medal, GV (10068 Sjt J. Porter, 1/Sea: Hdrs); British War Medal; Victory Medal (10068 Sjt, Sea. Highrs); Army Temperance Society, India, Medal, with top bar “For Merit”.

    Porter received the DCM in the London Gazette of 3rd June 1915:
    “For gallant conduct and resource at Neuve Chapelle on 10
    th
    March 1915, when, under heavy fire, he succeeded in taking a portion of his platoon well on rear of the German trenches in order to bring more effective fire on the enemy”.
    Sjt. Porter was killed in action on 7th January 1916 in the Persian Gulf. He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial. Porter’s Medal Index Card shows that he also received a 1914 Star (location unknown).
