    Henry John Willder was born at Great Wakering, Essex, on 18 April 1888 and commenced his naval service as a Stoker Second Class in H.M.S. Acheron on 19 November 1907. He was advanced to Leading Stoker in H.M.S. Swiftsure in December 1914, and Stoker Petty Officer in H.M.S. Intrepid in September 1917. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in December 1922, and was shore pensioned from H.M.S. Greenwich in November 1929, but was recalled for War service as Pensioned Chief Petty Officer in August 1939.
    HMS Swiftsure (Service period March 1913 - May 1916) - After the beginning of World War I in August 1914, Swiftsure escorted troop convoys in the Indian Ocean until she was transferred to the Suez Canal Patrol in December. After defending the Canal in early 1915 from Ottoman attacks, the ship was then transferred to the Dardanelles in February and saw action in the Dardanelles Campaign bombarding Ottoman fortifications. Swiftsure was assigned to convoy escort duties in the Atlantic from early 1916 until she was paid off in April 1917 to provide crews for anti-submarine vessels.
    HMS Intrepid - (2 Apr 1917 - 7 Jan 1918)
    On the outbreak of the First World War Intrepid was based at Dover, undertaking minelaying duties as part of the Dover Patrol.
    In 1915-16 she became a Depot ship, North Russia. In 1917 she was in use as a depot ship in the White Sea as part of the British North Russia Squadron. Willder also served on other Ships / Shore stations including HMS Courageous.
